Takshashila Mahavidyalaya, Amravati was established in June 1984.The mission undertaken by the parent trust Shri Dadasaheb Gawai Charitable Trust, Amravati was to strive for the realization of the goals laid down by Dr. B.R.Ambedkar, the great visionary and the father of Indian Constitution. The institution owes its existence to the vision and the foresight of Hon’ble Late Shri R.S. alias Dadasaheb Gawai, former Governor of Kerala State who inspires us all to seek perfection in our entire endeavour. All the institutions which were started by the Trust seeks to fulfil the goal of providing higher education to students belonging to the socially and the economically backward classes of the society.

The main objective of our institution is to uplift and encourage the poor, downtrodden and the needy students. The blessings bestowed by Late Shri Dadasaheb Gawai and the devotion, determination and the perseverance shown in completing the goals by the Founder President of the Trust and the Former First Lady of Kerala State, Dr. Kamaltai R,. Gawai, have culminated in the establishment of this College.

The College strives hard to realise its goals and objectives. Like other institutions, we too combine our curricular activities with extra-curricular activities. Our students regularly participate in athletic meets and University tournaments. Extension activities like the N.S.S., N.C.C. generate a lot of interest amongst the students. Our student volunteers have been participating in the camps held both by the College and by the University and other institutions both within and outside the state. It is our objective to nurture the talents of some of these students and make them realize the importance of social and voluntary work amongst the poor and the marginalized sections of the society.

The College conducts Vipassana, a form of meditation. The Founder President of the Management is an acharya of this form of meditation. Many of our teachers and students continue to practice this. It helps them to realise the ultimate goal of becoming responsible citizens of the country.
Maximum number of students we have on rolls belong to the under-privileged sections of the society. The faculty tries its utmost to help the students of this category to realize their potential. We conduct personality development programmes, General knowledge tests, debates, essay competitions for their social development. Our social activities include public awareness campaigns, blood donation camps, assistance in the pulse polio programmes and economic surveys of the rural poor. These activities make the students understand their true worth as citizens in the India.

Takshashila Mahavidyalaya offers courses like the B.A in the Arts Faculty and B.Com in the Commerce faculty. Both these Courses are of Three years’ duration. M.A in Pali is of Two Years’ duration. In 2006, self-financing courses like the B.B.A, B.C.A, M.C.A., M.B.A., B.Com (English Medium) and M.Com courses were started. From the session 2014-15 the college has introduced M.A. in History and Political Science and Bachelor of Journalism and Mass communication. From the session 2016-17 the college has introduced B.Sc , M.A. in Marathi Besides these, Courses of Maharashtra State Board of Technical education: P.C. Maintenance & Hardware, Desk Top Publishing, career oriented courses like, Certificate Courses in Translation Proficiency and English communicative skills were also started by the College.

Our students have wholeheartedly joined national programmes like the Pulse Polio programmes, AIDS awareness, family planning drives, anti-tobacco campaigns, campaigned actively against public defecation in the villages. These programmes have been a part of the College extension work.

There are five buildings in the premises of the College, which are situated in Shyamnagar, in Amravati. Three storied main building have 12 classrooms, a spacious office room and a staff room. Besides these there is principal’s cabin, NCC, Physical Education Dept. and Gym, Conference room, Girls Common room, NAAC room, CTC, Competitive examination center, Vocational Courses laboratory, NSS, Dr.Ambedkar Thoughts Center, Commerce department etc. Building on the Right has Main Computer Lab., UGC Network Resource Centre, Language Lab., Home Economics Lab, Science Lab, esigning. Building on the Left have eight classrooms. Building adjacent to the Main building has Vipassana meditation hall and Girls hostel. One Indoor Hall with sports facilities is the recent introduction in the premises.

There is a beautiful landscaped garden in the campus. The premises have always been used for many social, cultural and educational activities. The College strives its utmost to achieve its goals and objectives. It is for this reason that the institution combines curricula activity with extra- curricular activity. The College has always instilled a community orientation in the students. The College has dress code for the staff and the students. The College begins the day with the rendering of the National anthem and meditation. Most of the students of the Institution are from the Scheduled castes and the Scheduled Tribes. This gives the College a distinctive character. Our students are from the poorer sections of the society. They have suffered discrimination and ostracism for no fault of theirs. The College attempts to bring these children from the fringes of the society to the mainstream. We try to change their outlook and instill finer values in them. We deem our work amongst them to be a service to humanity.

Many of our students find it difficult to pay their fees or to pay for their uniforms. In many cases, teachers come to their help. Teachers donate books, clothes and cycles to the students every year. We believe that a person must be of some service to humanity, to the poor and the needy. These lessons are inculcated in the students and they too are encouraged to serve the less fortunate amongst their brethren. Service, therefore, has been our tradition.

The value orientation stems from our constant endeavour to bring the students of the SCs and STs to the level of the other students. We instill the lessons of equality and brotherhood in all the students of the institution. We want to take their rightful place in the society. It is a matter of great pride to us that the values imbibed from the institution has helped many of our students to make a mark in different fields.

Most of the students of the College are from the Scheduled castes and Tribes. They constitute about 90% of the student population. Most of them are from the poorer strata of the society. They cannot pay the Tuition fees or the fees which are levied by the University. The College helps them to get their Scholarships by helping them to fill their Scholarship forms at the time of their admissions. This is done to ensure that monetary benefits given to them by the Central and the State governments are received by these students on time. The College also runs Remedial Classes for SC and ST students who are weak in subjects like English and Economics. The College also has a Language Lab which will be used in the future to better their communication skills in English. Some students seek admissions to the Hostels run by the Government’s Social Welfare Office. Paper work for this is done quickly so that they are not deprived of their seats in hostels. Those who commute from different places are also helped to get their travel passes by getting them concession forms. The Social Welfare Department has with the educational institutions, constituted committees to acquaint students about the welfare schemes for the SCs and the STs. The College too has formed such a society which in its periodic meetings informs the students about the schemes for the poor and the downtrodden student sections of the society. The College also conducts free classes for various competitive examinations for students from SC/ST and the EBC categories.

The College has a number of women students on its rolls. The College ensures that all the welfare schemes instituted by the Government for them are implemented properly. The College has also constituted a Women’s redressal Cell which along with the College N.S.S Unit holds meetings and workshops to acquaint girl students about issues pertaining to women.
